Biography:

Robert Hanner is a highly respected civil and family law attorney. For nearly four decades, Mr. Hanner has handled complex family law matters ranging from divorce, child custody, child support and alimony to equitable distribution. His practice includes collaborative law.

Mr. Hanner has been a Certified Family Law Specialist since 1989 (the first year of the establishment of the Family Law Certification). Certification is granted by the North Carolina State Board of Legal Specialization, which requires passing a rigorous examination, peer review of legal abilities, character and ethics; and regular continuing education in his specialty field to insure he remains current with the ever-changing domestic relations and divorce laws. This certification is the only means in North Carolina for an attorney to be considered a “specialist.”

Mr. Hanner has also maintained a personal injury practice for the past 30 years and has considerable jury trial experience representing plaintiffs injured as a result of automobile and motorcycle accidents.

Mr. Hanner has an AV rating by Martindale Hubbell, a nationally known rating organization for attorneys and has been selected as a Super Lawyer by Law and Politics (a magazine for the attorney audience) through a rigorous selection process, including peer review.

His memberships include the 26th Judicial District for North Carolina; American Bar Association; North Carolina State Bar; North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers; and the Mecklenburg County Collaborative Family Law Practice Group.

Mr. Hanner is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina; the United States Court of Military Appeals and all North Carolina state courts.

Mr. Hanner has taught continuing legal education courses for the Mecklenburg County Bar and the Family Law Specialist Section of the North Carolina State Bar Association. Mr. Hanner is a past Chairman of the Family Law Section of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association from 1992-1993.

Mr. Hanner earned his B.S.B.A. in 1968 from The Citadel and his J.D. in 1969 from Wake Forest University. Mr. Hanner attended military judges school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia and was certified as a military judge. He was admitted to practice in North Carolina state courts in 1969 and the United States Court of Military Appeals in 1970.

Mr. Hanner served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps as a JAG officer from 1969 to 1975. During his service, he was assigned as defense counsel, trial counsel, military judge and as the staff judge advocate for the U.S. Marine Corps Airbase, Beaufort, South Carolina. Mr. Hanner has actively practiced law in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina since his honorable discharge from the service.
